Ticket to ride

Parking enforcement, while important for keeping roads open and maintaining traffic flow, can often be a loss-making operation. Some agencies are turning to automated enforcement which reduces costs and avoids confrontations between staff and violators. A system of automated enforcement currently in use in Amsterdam features a drive-by system, in which a vehicle with an on-board system is driven down roads and determines whether the vehicles are parked legally. In the United Kingdom, however, automated enforcement is not popular, and officials are considering a ban on closed-circuit television based parking enforcement, which would mean that parking attendants would be the only form of enforcement. In order to avoid conflict with members of the public, some officers are using body-worn cameras.
