Development of Communication ECU for EV/PHV Charging Systems

The authors have developed a communication electronic control unit (ECU) for electric vehicle/plug-in hybrid vehicle (EV/PHV) charging systems using power line communication (PLC) technology, which works as a gateway when a plug-in charging control ECU communicates with devices outside the vehicle, such as a charging station and HEMS (Home Energy Management System). This communication ECU, hereafter referred to as “PLC ECU”, has been adopted in several verification tests domestically and abroad since January 2013. PLC ECU is compliant with the specification of ISO/IEC15118 and Smart Energy Profile 2 for communication to off-vehicle devices. The protocol to communicate with off-vehicle devices is based on TCP/IP used on the Internet. It has different network characteristics from on-vehicle network in some respects such as required response time, data size and reliability. That is the reason why PLC ECU is required good handling as a gateway. The authors have solved this issue by applying priority setting and task synchronization of real-time operating system (OS) properly.
