BRITISH RAIL IS MOVING BUT NOT IN APT YET

Progress with the Advanced Passenger Train does not look as promising as the BR's High Speed Train has been. Nothing appears more certain than that the APT as now evolving, even at this end of several years and even more changes of mind, will never turn a wheel in profitable railway service. From the start, the programme has shown little evidence of practical design engineering sense, in particular, railway rolling stock engineering sense. The wealth of experience available in that field, in the British rolling stock industry, and in BR itself just across from the wonder train's birthplace seems to have found no place in the various bits of design that have so far come to light.
