Individual Vehicle Level Evaluation of Loop, Video Image, and Microwave Detector

Traffic data accuracy is crucial to decide the optimal traffic management strategy in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). After reviewing vehicle detection concepts and characteristics, three types of vehicle detectors, namely loop, video image, and microwave vehicle detectors are evaluated in this study. Individual vehicle level volume, speed, and occupancy time data from each detector are compared against the corresponding reference data in the Korea detector test bed, in which well-organized detector evaluation system was established. Consequently, the detailed performance characteristics of each sensor were identified. This study contributes by enhancing the understanding of the features of detector performance and possibly supporting a better choice when selecting a vehicle detector for the circumstances in which the detector will be placed.
