Research on Future Provision of Information Infrastructure for Road Traffic Information to Complement FM Multiplex Broadcasting

The Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) Center relies on FM multiplex broadcasting and beacons to provide various kind of traffic information to vehicles in Japan equipped with car-navigation systems. It enables motorist to receive information about traffic congestion, estimated travel-times, and road or lane closures caused by accidents, road works, inclement weather, disasters, etc. This paper reports on research into a structure for providing information in addition to the FM multiplex broadcasting currently provided by the VICS Center. The objective is to use this information platform to provide information more widely, including areas where emergency information carried over FM radio waves cannot be received during disasters. Through such research, the VICS Center aims to give society public infrastructure that will be useful during disasters in the future.
