Travel Time Estimation Method based on Traffic Data Collected by Vehicle Detectors

Traffic jams are a frequent problem due to increasing traffic in urban areas. Attempts have been made to apprise drivers of the accurate travel time in order to allow them to take alternative routes, thus eliminating traffic jams. It is therefore important to establish a method for accurately estimating travel time. In general, travel time estimation is performed by using past data. As an example of this technique, automatic vehicle identification (AVI) systems that calculate the travel time by analyzing images captured by cameras have usually been employed. However, a large-scale investment is required for deploying an AVI system, which limits its application. In addition, the result obtained from the AVI system is not an estimation of travel time, but merely records of past data. Here the authors propose a method of estimating travel time by analyzing data from vehicle sensors.
