AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL TEST PROGRAM - TECHNICAL REPORT NO 1

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT'S (BARTD) PURPOSE IN THE PROGRAM IS TO TEST AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL (ATC) SYSTEMS PROPOSED TO MEET THE OBJECTIVES OF TRAIN PROTECTION, LINE SUPERVISION, AND AUTOMATIC TRAIN OPERATION IN CONTROLLING FAST TRAINS ON CLOSE HEADWAYS. THE SYSTEMS WERE DEVELOPED AND DEMONSTRATED BY GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY (GE), GENERAL RAILWAY SIGNAL COMPANY (GRS), WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE COMPANY (WABCO) AND WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY (WELCO), RESPECTIVELY, AND WERE TESTED AT THE BART TEST TRACK NEAR CONCORD, CALIFORNIA. THE PHILCO DIVISION (WESTERN DEVELOPMENT LABORATORIES) OF THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY, WHICH PROVIDED INSTRUMENTATION SERVICES TO THE ATC TEST PROGRAM, DEVELOPED AND SUBMITTED FOR TESTING AN ATC SYSTEM OF ITS OWN, WHICH TO DATE SEEMS THE MOST FEASIBLE PROPOSAL. THE VARIOUS CONTRACTORS ARE CONTINUING WITH SUPPLEMENTARY TESTING. RESULTS OF THE CURRENT TEST SERIES ARE REPORTED. /UMTA/
