AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM

THE PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT WAS TO DESCRIBE THE RESULTS OF GENERAL ELECTRIC'S AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT'S (BARTD) DIABLO TEST TRACK IN CONCORD, CALIFORNIA. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM WERE TO OBTAIN AN ADVANCED TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM WHICH WOULD PERMIT INCREASED TRACK CAPACITY OVER THAT POSSIBLE WITH CONVENTIONAL SIGNALING SYSTEMS AND MANUAL TRAIN CONTROL, TO OPTIMIZE EQUIPMENT UTILIZATION AND OPERATING COSTS, AND TO IMPROVE SERVICE THROUGH AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLED TRAIN MOVEMENTS. THE DEMONSTRATION PROJECT WAS CONDUCTED IN THREE PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE CONSISTED OF QUALIFYING TESTS IN WHICH INDIVIDUAL CARS WERE OPERATED AUTOMATICALLY AROUND THE COMPLETE TRACKAGE OF CONSTRUCTION PHASE I. STANDARDS TESTING COMPRISED PHASE II, WHEREBY MEASUREMENT WAS MADE OF THE REPEATABILITY OF PERFORMANCE. IN PHASE III IT WAS PROPOSED THAT EIGHT SPECIFIC TESTS BE CONDUCTED TO HIGHLIGHT SPECIFIC ATTRIBUTES OF THE SYSTEM: (1) SAFETY, (2) STOPPING ACCURACY, (3) MAINTENANCE OF SCHEDULED HEADWAY, (3) DECENTRALIZED CONTROL, (4) ALTERNATIVE ROUTING, (5) RESTORATION OF PLANNED SERVICE, (5) DETECTION OF SLOW TRAINS, (6) MAJOR HEADWAY CORRECTION, (7) MINIMUM TRANSFER TIME, AND (8) FLECIBLE CONTROL PROGRAMMING. COMPLETE AUTOMATION OF THE ENTIRE BARTD SYSTEM PROVED TO BE FEASIBLE AND PRACTICAL. AUTOMATIC OPERATION IS NECESSARY IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE SAFE, DEPENDABLE, AND PREDICTABLE OPERATION AT A HEADWAY--SPEED COMBINATION NEVER BEFORE COMTEMPLATED. WITH A RELIABLY CONSISTENT FRICTION BRAKING SYSTEM, A STATION STOPPING ACCURACY WELL WITHIN THE SPECIFIED PLUS OR MINUS ONE FOOT CAN BE EXPECTED WITH LESS THAN A THREE SIGMA DEVIATE. A CONSISTENT SPEED REGULATION IN COMBINATION WITH RESPONSIVE HEADWAY REGULATION WILL RESULT IN THE MAINTENANCE OF SERVICE FREQUENCY HAVING DEVIATIONS TOO SMALL TO BE DISCERNIBLE BY THE PASSENGER. /UMTA/
