FUTURE GARAGE FACILITIES FOR AC TRANSIT SYSTEM -- TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO 23

THE REPORT EXAMINES PRESENT AND FUTURE GARGAE FACILITIES FOR A MAJOR BUS SYSTEM IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA AS A PLANNING INSTRUMENT FOR THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TRANSIT DEMONSTRATION PROJECT. TWO FACTORS NECESSITATED THE STUDY: FIRST, CONSTRUCTION OF THE BART (BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT) STATION IN RICHMOND WILL REQUIRE DEMOLITION OF CERTAIN BUS SERVICE FACILITIES NOW ADJOINING THE STATION SITE. SECOND, PROSPECTIVE ELIMINATION OF TRANS-BAY BUS ROUTES FROM RICHMOND AND OVERALL MODIFICATION OF EAST BAY COMMUTER ROUTES WILL ALTER CONSIDERABLY THE FUTURE NEED FOR GARAGE FACILITIES THROUGHOUT THE AREA. THE REPORT SUMMARIZES BRIEFLY THE THREE MAINTENANCE FACILITIES UTILIZED BY THE AC TRANSIT COMPANY, INCLUDING THE RICHMOND SITE WHICH CONTROLS MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES IN THE NORTHERN TRANSIT CORRIDOR. PRESENT OPERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED ALONG WITH DATA ON SCHEDULED MILES OF SERVICE WITHIN EACH OF THE THREE SUBDIVISIONS. ON THE BASIS OF THESE DATA, THE REPORT PROJECTS SERVICE OUTPUT AND MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS THROUGH 1975 AT EACH FACILITY. IN EACH CASE, SERVICE CURTAILMENTS AFTER THE BART SYSTEM BECOMES OPERATIONAL WILL PERMIT REDUCTIONS IN GARAGE, EQUIPMENT, AND VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS. THE REPORT CONCLUDES WITH AN ESTIMATE OF TOTAL VEHICLE NEEDS -- 470 BUSES IN 1975. /UMTA/
