Characteristics of the Portable Reference Equipment Developed for ITS System Performance Evaluation in Korea

In Korea intelligent transportation systems ( ITS) have been deployed in large quantity over the national expressway/highway networks since the year 2000. The major role of the systems was providing real-time traffic information to vehicle drivers. To provide reliable real-time traffic information, it is necessary to collect traffic data with a certain level of accuracy from the ITS system installed. However, the system already in operation needs to be checked and calibrated periodically, since as time goes by, it does not get to work properly and thus cannot produce accurate traffic data. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs instituted the ITS system performance evaluation. In this paper the outline of the ITS system performance evaluation is introduced based upon its historical background. In addition, the characteristics and system configuration of the portable reference equipment developed for the performance evaluation are introduced.
