Sustainable Freight Transport Systems through Strengthening Cluster Initiatives

Logistics clusters, involving a cooperation of industry, authorities and education and research institutes (called the "triple helix"), are key entities for constituting crucial research and innovation initiatives for providing significant contributions to a sustainable freight transport system. The paper presents options for strengthening logistics cluster initiatives in the South West of The Netherlands and in Flanders, especially considering the situation that, compared with passenger transport, Intelligent Transport Systems for freight transport are less well developed and deployed. The results contribute to the development of an approach for learning from best practices of clusters for stimulating the establishment of a sustainable freight transport system.
