Engineering Overview of a Road Recycling Machine for Portland Cement Concrete Pavement

A previous engineering study evaluated the feasibility of a machine that could effectively and efficiently remove and crush Portland cement concrete pavements (PCCP) on the roadway. This paper presents an engineering overview evaluating and finalizing the components of a prototype (mobile) Road Recycling Machine in light of ongoing developments and current equipment. The study identified critical components and problem areas, proposed solutions, and assessed the probability of a successful development. Specific project objectives included: 1) Documentation of the existing concept; 2) Calculation of necessary performance parameter for the machine; 3) Comparison of the needed parameters to existing and planned componentry; 4) Forming and coordinating a design advisory team representing the proposer, the Kansas Department of Transportation, contractor(s), manufacturing facility, and component supplier to assure compatibility of design and operational requirements; 5) Finalizing the design; and 6) Preparing a report addressing items 1 to 5, including presentation material. It was concluded that the design of the machine is viable and that its performance will meet expectations.
