Improvement of the Electromagnetic WAVE Environment at ETC Toll Gates

As of the end of December 2012, as many as 90% of the vehicles using expressways adopt ETC (1). On the other hand, vehicles registered in ETC rarely stop in ETC lanes when they pass through ETC toll gates due to communication errors (problems) that occur during communication between the vehicles and the ETC wireless system installed in the ETC lanes. These communication errors result from the diffused reflection of electromagnetic waves emitted from the ETC wireless system on ETC toll gate structures or other vehicle bodies. As a solution to these communication errors, the electromagnetic wave environment has been improved by installing an electromagnetic wave absorbent. It was concluded that past collective measures to improve the electromagnetic wave environment aren't sufficient enough in the situation that the number of vehicles types equipped with an ETC transponder onboard and passing through ETC lanes is increasing. This paper reports electromagnetic wave analysis technology for quantifying the characteristics of electromagnetic waves at ETC tool gates and the proved performance of the electromagnetic wave absorbent intended to minimize the scope of measures against electromagnetic waves.
