Key Links in the Coal Supply Chain

A large portion of the coal that is transported in the United States travels by rail. Railroads have had difficulty with speed and efficiency lately due to cold winters and increased demand for coal. Mining companies and utilities need railroad infrastructure to be at optimal functionality and will be less willing to work with rail if it takes a long time to load coal at mines, transport it, and unload at power plants. Rail companies must keep infrastructure in top condition at both ends of the supply chain to ensure efficiency.
