Gigabit Optical Transmission Using Step-Index Hard Polymer Cladding Fiber Cord for Vehicles

The authors evaluate the gigabit transmission characteristics of a step-index hard polymer cladding fiber (SI-HPCF) cord that has high flexibility and heat resistance suitable for in-vehicle use. First, the authors measure the fiber length dependence of transmission bandwidth under some launching conditions, and then evaluate the bending and thermal characteristics of the transmission bandwidth. The authors compare the measured transmission bandwidth against calculated values derived from a theoretical model, and find that the SI-HPCF cord has a very small mode coupling coefficient. In addition, the authors confirmed that the cord offers good eye opening and low power penalties. It is shown that an optical link system based on SI-HPCF cord well supports gigabit transmission.
