Accessible for all?

Agencies may find it difficult to meet new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rules, as examined in this article. A key aspect of the act is that agencies that are altering roadways must provide curb ramps at the points where street-level pedestrian walkways cross curbs, this making these routes accessible to those with disabilities. There has been joint technical guidance from the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Transportation as to which road-maintenance activities will trigger the curb ramp installations; some activities are deemed routine and others as an alteration, as described in detail in this article. The impact of the ADA on California, in particular, is discussed.
