Taking on water

Researchers at the University of Minnesota are looking at ways, along with engineers from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), to develop methods of protecting roads by building embankments that are resistant to being washed out during floods. A facility has been constructed to study the problem, with a laboratory capable of conducting hydraulic experiments harnessing the natural hydro-power of nearby St. Anthony Falls. A combination of methods may be necessary to protect roads in flat regions, potentially saving public funds and allowing for other projects.
