Perspective for the Deployment of Intelligent Speed Adaptation from Japanese Experience

The deployment of intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) has been a long debated issue in ITS. Professor Oliver Carsten’s paper of “Is intelligent speed adaptation ready for deployment?” which appeared in Accident Analysis and Prevention 48 (2012) is one of the discussions on this issue, and describes current state in Europe and Australia. This paper explains: how ISA has been discussed and how the environment of ISA has changed in the last decade in Japan; how Soft Car project, a Japanese ISA project directed by the author, has been carried out; and what should be done for the deployment of ISA in Japan and world-wide at large.
