Fighting Thermal Segregation

In order to avoid inconsistent densities in asphalt pavement, some state departments of transportation are using a system to detect thermal segregation in asphalt mats and record the thermal profile. Inconsistent densities can be caused when freshly paved asphalt does not compact properly due to becoming too cool. The system uses infrared thermometers attached to a bar on the back of a paver. The thermometers measure mat temperature as the paver moves. An on-board computer provides real-time data and a thermal profile of the asphalt mat. A number of states have been trialing and using this system, but there are many that are not yet familiar with it.
