Pick & Mix

One of the largest hurdles to the mass-markieting of electric vehicles (EV) is the concern about range and this factor puts a lot of pressure on battery developers to deliver more powerful solutions. However, choosing the right chemistry is not easy. The article discusses how alleviating range anxiety is not the only issue. Concerns that battery capacity will deplete rapidly, which will require the replacement of expensive replacement cells and the relatively small number of EVs catching fire continue to hinder EV buyers in all markets. Of course safety, reliability and durability are important and any new battery solution will have to be cost effective for consumers as well as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Some of the options discussed in this article are the use of lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and li-ion based technology.
