A New Tier of Engine Technology

Engine manufacturers have been working for over a decade to improve diesel engines on railroads. It was necessary for manufacturers to adjust their products for each tier of emission standards regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Tier 4 regulations will go into effect at the start of 2015, and railroads are working to make engines compliant with regulations. Technological advances in diesel engines have reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Many railroads are looking towards natural gas as an alternative to diesel and need engines that can run on both. Railroads are also looking to develop systems with the capability to perform remote diagnostics.
