Bordering on a Breakthrough

Union Pacific Railroad (UP) recently opened a new intermodal facility in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. One of UP’s goals in building the facility was to divert freight from trucks. Over a million trucks pass through the region each year, which UP hopes will help build volume at the terminal. UP has been working in recent years to increase intermodal business. The terminal can increase the number of destinations and routes that are in use, and it is close to the United States-Mexico border, allowing a more fluid border crossing. If operations at the terminal are as successful as hoped, UP may add a classification yard or other facilities to increase capacity.
