Development of a Probe Information Utilization System to Facilitate Road Management

In Japan, the ITS Spot system has been deployed, in which radio beacons are placed along roads to collect probe data from compatible car navigation systems. As the number of ITS-compatible car navigation systems increases, this will allow the low-cost collection of large amounts of probe data, resulting in frequent collection of travel speed data by road segment as well as in wide-area road management. This paper presents an overview of a probe data utilization system for contributing toward increased efficiency and advanced road management.
