The Truck Stops Here

Intelligent truck parking (ITP), can help to reduce some of the problems related to freight, where one of the main problems of today, is inadequate parking space, along the main highway network, causing accidents and reducing the possibility for truckers to comply with drive time regulations. The project at Ustrup East, which is located on a lay-by in the southern part of Denmark, was opened, by the minister of transport in January 2012, and seeks to reduce some of the problems mentioned above. The fully automatic, system was built on experiences from ports and pilot studies carried out in the EU. The system uses laser technology for lane measurement, lane lights for guidance, WMS and TMC to inform drivers of the number of free parking space [1]. The main idea of the system is to utilize the existing lay-by in a more effective manner, in order to increase parking capacity, without physically expanding the ground area. Preliminary evaluations are showing good results, as an increase in capacity, have reached 94 %. The ITP project, is partly funded by the EU, and thus, comply with EU directive no. 2010/40/EU “information services for safe and secure parking for trucks and commercial vehicles”.
