Multi-hop Communication and Multi-protocol Gateway for Disaster Network Assumed Vehicles as Local Network Nodes

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan has initiated many R&D programs to establish new communication system which are robust and dependable in disaster. In the programs, the joint proposal “Multilayered communications network” by Tohoku University, KDDI Laboratories, KDDI Corporation, and OKI Electric Industry has been accepted. In the joint project OKI has carried out “Research and development of the disaster information temporary network assumed vehicles as local network nodes”. The temporary network is to connect base places, such as refuges, hospitals, and city hall, and so on, in 2 km around. OKI’s role is set-up and connection of wireless multi-hop communication network by the means of different plural wireless communication among the base places, for less than 30 minutes, after emergency vehicles arrived at the above base places. As the wireless communication systems equipped on vehicles, it assumed the existing radio system or near practical use system in Japan, and the domestic dedicated short range communication (DSRC) system which have been already put to practical use in electronic toll collection (ETC), 700 MHz band Intelligent Transport System, and European and American DSRC system are referred. For multi-hop communication and different plural protocol of the different transmission speed, the authors have evaluated the throughput and the End-to-End packet delivery delay time, by simulation and prototype. And the public field examination was carried out jointly, at Tohoku University Aobayama Campus on March 2013.
