Development of GPS-Equipped Audio Type ITS Spot-Compatible on Board Unit

Infomatization of automobile progress and research of the intelligent transportation system (ITS) technology is advanced, aiming at traffic safety, countermeasure for road traffic congestion, an environmental measure, etc. The road-to-vehicle communication system used dedicated short range communications (DSRC) is an effective measure. In Japan, road traffic information service using DSRC was started. Road side systems collect prove information and the information are utilized for traffic dynamic management. Communication performance is improvement and it enables information distribution by the picture and voice message. At the same time, systems in vehicle become sophisticated and expensive. The authors develop small system combined global positioning system (GPS) with the ITS Spot-compatible on board unit (OBU), based on DSRC standard in Japan. This paper shows the system configuration of the GPS-equipped audio type ITS Spot-compatible on board unit, and describes the function of announcement road traffic information.
