CLEANING UP THE US DIESEL FLEET
Federal legislation designed to reduce air pollution in the United States does not specifically cover diesel locomotives, but the Environmental Protection Agency may request action if improvements in exhaust levels are not achieved voluntarily. The locomotive industry is alive to the problem, and is taking action that should anticipate any Federal standards which might be imposed by modifications to current and future models; but there are conflicts between the need to reduce oxides of nitrogen and the control of visible smoke.
