NASSAU COUNTY BUS SYSTEM, A SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL ASPECTS: TECHNICAL REPORT NO 2

DRIVER AND MECHANICS WAGES IN THE MANY UNIONIZED AND NONUNION BUS TRANSIT COMPANIES IN NASSAU COUNTY RANGE FROM A LOW OF $2.00 TO A HIGH OF $3.45. LABOR COSTS ACCOUNT FOR TWO-THIRDS OF OPERATING EXPENSES. OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS OPERATING REVENUES FOR THE LARGEST SYSTEM HAVE RISEN ONLY SLIGHTLY, AN INCREASE IN FARES BEING OFFSET BY A LOSS OF OVER TWO MILLION RIDERS ANNUALLY. WITHIN THE EXISTING FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS OPERATIONAL SAVINGS CAN BE REALIZED IN SEVERAL WAYS, E.G., CENTRALIZED PURCHASE OF PARTS, FUEL, AND TIRES; SPECIALIZED MAINTENANCE FACILITIES, SUCH AS BUS WASHING MACHINES; CENTRALIZED PAINT SHOPS; AND CONSOLIDATION OF INFORMATION SERVICES AND ADVERTISING. /UMTA/
