Transportation Gets Social

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) launched its first social media sites in 2011 and has been expanding its social media presence since then. FHWA leaders recognize the effects of social media on people’s everyday lives and the opportunities for communication that social media provides. In 2010, before engaging, FHWA formed a study of the impacts of social media to determine whether it would be appropriate and beneficial for the agency’s use. FHWA is currently sanctioned by the Office of the Secretary to use Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and YouTube, though they are open to exploring additional social media applications in the future.
