Application of the Camera-Equipped Drive Recorder to the Recognition of Road Surface Markings

This paper introduces several applications of in-vehicle equipment with a camera capable of recognizing or identifying road surface markings (hereafter called in-vehicle equipment). First, the in-vehicle equipment can be used for safe driving control by recognizing speed limit markings. The speed limit markings recognized by individual vehicles are collectively stored on a server. Sharing a speed limit map among all vehicles allows for more detailed monitoring of speeds and safe driving guidance. Second, the in-vehicle equipment helps track and monitor road conditions based on the frequent capturing of “indefinite images” or variations in the position of marking images appearing on the monitor. The term “indefinite image” in this context means that it is not certain whether the image captured with the camera shows a road surface marking or not. For instance, though a puddle in the road may lower the system’s ability to accurately recognize road surface markings, the system can still alert the driver to use caution in poor driving/road conditions in advance, as warranted. Third, the in-vehicle equipment can be used to monitor the aging of road surface markings. The numerical data such as “alignment” in a recognition algorithm is used as an indicator, and the same marking is monitored chronologically for a long period of time. Once the value falls below a defined threshold, it is determined that the marking should be painted again. This application is expected to lead to more efficient maintenance of roads.
