Hull Coatings and Fuel Efficiency: Recent Developments

Antifouling coatings contribute to the maintenance of smooth hulls by reducing frictional resistance. They can also improve fuel performance optimization an average of 5% over traditional tin-based polishing system. This article describes recent developments in hull coating technology. Included is a description of a hydrogel surface modification from coatings supplier Hempel that improves resistance to slime fouling. Also described is an advanced Intersleek coating from International Paint that improves static fouling resistance. A number of additional hull coating technologies are outlined, aimed at improving fuel efficiency and preventing transfer of aquatic species.
