Linking San Francisco’s Past and Future...By Rail

San Francisco, California is an example of a city that has operated its streetcar and light-rail networks for more than a century, in contrast to the wave of new streetcar systems emerging across the country. Having served the citizens and visitors of San Francisco for over a hundred years, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA), previously known as the San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI), includes the famous cable cars, historic streetcars and light-rail vehicles. The streetcars' history, as well as its modernization in the early 1980s, are presented in this article. Plans for the future, in terms of vehicle fleet renovation, replacement and expansion, are also discussed.
