GRAPHIC MEDIA FOR THE PROMOTION OF BUS TRANSPORTATION IN SIX GREAT CITIES

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SYSTEMATIC AND UNIVERSAL GRAPHIC INFORMATION DISPLAYS IN BUS TRANSPORTATION ARE SUMMARIZED. AS PREPARATION FOR THE STUDY, THE AUTHOR TOURED SIX MAJOR CITIES (LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO, SAN FRANCISCO, BOSTON, PARIS, AND LONDON) TO EXAMINE OPERATION CONDITIONS AND CONTROLLING FACTORS IN THE USE OF GRAPHIC MEDIA FOR BUS PROMOTION. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS RECORDED ON THE TOUR WERE ANALYZED TO SYNTHESIZE DETAILED STANDARDS AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES FOR PROPOSED MEDIA DISPLAYS IN THE WASHINGTN METROPOLITAN AREA. AMERICAN GRAPHICS ARE CONCLUDED TO BE FREQUENTLY INEFFECTIVE IN CONVEYING VITAL INFORMATION. THE BRITISH SYSTEM OBSERVED IN LONDON IS DISCUSSED IN SOME DETAIL. THE BASIC CRITICISM OF GRAPHIC INFORMATION DISPLAYS IN THE UNITED STATES IS THEIR LACK OF UNIFORMITY FROM CITY TO CITY AND THEIR TENDENCY TO CONVEY MESSAGES WHICH ARE OFTEN CONFUSING, INCOMPLETE, OR DIFFICULT TO READ. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS AND CRITERIA FOR THIRTEEN SEPARATE AREAS OF GRAPHIC DISPLAY INCLUDE BUS STOPS, DESTINATION MARKERS, TIMETABLES, ROUTE DIAGRAMS, ROUTE FINDERS, SYSTEM MAPS, BUS SHELTERS, BUS FRONT-END DESIGN, BASIC COMMUNICATION, FARE POSTINGS, TRANSFERS, GENERAL SIGNS, AND MAINTENANCE OF GRAPHIC MATERIAL. IN EACH CASE, SHORTCOMINGS OF THE EXISTING SYSTEMS ARE EXAMINED AND SOLUTIONS ADVANCED. PROPOSALS ARE SUGGESTED IN A MANNER APPLICABLE TO ANY TRANSIT SYSTEM, AND THE FOCUS OF THE REPORT IS CONCERNED WITH THE TYPE OF INFORMATION USEFUL TO ALL TRANSIT USERS, RATHER THAN WITH THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF GRAPHIC MEDIA. /UMTA/
