FEEDER-BUS SERVICE: ROCKLAND COUNTY, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK CITY

DURING SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER OF 1964, RESIDENTS OF ROCKLAND COUNTY WERE SURVEYED REGARDING THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD USE OF ROCKLAND COUNTY FEEDER BUS SERVICE; DIFFERENT INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES WERE USED FOR EACH GROUP. USERS WERE GIVEN QUESTIONNAIRES REQUESTING INFORMATION REGARDING TRIP ORIGINS, DESTINATIONS, LENGTH OF BUS SERVICE USE, TRIP PURPOSE, TRIP FREQUENCY, AND ATTITUDES TOWARD PRESENT BUS SERVICE, AMONG OTHER ITEMS. A SPECIAL TELEPHONE QUESTIONNAIRE WAS DESIGNED FOR NON-USERS TO DETERMINE WHY THE FEEDER BUS WAS NOT BEING USED BY THEM. COPIES OF THE QUESTIONNAIRES APPEAR IN THE APPENDIX. IN GENERAL, BOTH USERS AND NON-USERS OF THE PRESENT FEEDER BUS SERVICE WERE FOUND TO BE FAVORABLY DISPOSED TOWARD FEEDER BUS USE. THE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA FOR USE ARE PROXIMITY TO THE BUS ROUTE, TOTAL BUS TRAVEL TIME COMPARED TO COMPETITIVE TRAVEL MODE, FREQUENCY OF SCHEDULING, PROMPTNESS, AND COST. AMONG PRESENT USERS OF THE FEEDER BUS SERVICE, THE SINGLE REASON FOR DISSATISFACTION MOST FREQUENTLY CITED WAS THE INCONVENIENCE OF GETTING TO THE BUS STOP; THE NEXT FREQUENTLY CITED REASON WAS THE LENGTH OF TIME REQUIRED BY MUNEROUS BUS STOPS. NON- USERS LIKEWISE CITED THEIR DISTANCE FROM A BUS STOP, THE TIME CONSUMING RIDE, AND COST AS THE PRINCIPAL REASONS FOR NOT USING THE FEEDER BUS SERVICE. COST WAS MENTIONED FREQUENTLY BY BOTH USERS AND NON-USERS OF THE PRESENT SERVICE AS A CONSIDERATION IN THEIR CHOICE OF TRANSPORTATION MODE. MOST USERS WHO MENTIONED COST FELT THAT PRESENT RATES WERE TOO HIGH, A VIEW SHARED BY NON-USERS. SIGNIFICANTLY, THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT, MORE THAN 35 PERCENT OF AUTO USERS TRAVELING TO THE TARRYTOWN RAILWAY STATION PARKING LOT INDICATED THEY WERE MEMBERS OF A CAR POOL OR HAD AT LEAST ONE OTHER RIDER WITH THEM. /UMTA/
