FUTURE URBAN GROUND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS: DESIGN AND CONTROL CONSIDERATIONS

THIS REPORT DISCUSSES THE FUNDAMENTAL SYSTEM AND CONTROL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROPOSED AUTOMATED GROUND TRANSPORTATION CONCEPTS. THE PROBLEM FORMULATION PROVIDES A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TOWARD THE SYNTHESIS AND TECHNICAL EVALUATION OF A LARGE CLASS OF FUTURE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS EMPLOYING AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLED SINGLE-MODE OR DUAL-MODE VEHICLES ON INTRACITY GUIDEWAY NETWORKS. THIS REPORT DEVELOPS A SYSTEMATIC METHOD FOR EVALUATING BENEFITS OR COSTS THAT ARE RELATED TO THE QUALITY OF SERVICE. TRADE-OFFS BETWEEN IMPORTANT SYSTEM VARIABLES AND PARAMETERS ARE IDENTIFIED AND THEIR RELATIONS TO PERFORMANCE AND COST ARE DISCUSSED. IN ORDER TO PRESENT THE DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM OPERATION IN A TRACTABLE FORM, RELATIVELY SIMPLE NETWORKS ARE CONSIDERED, WHICH LEND THEMSELVES TO DIRECT ANALYTICAL APPROACHES. A STEADY-STATE DETERMINISTIC MODEL, WHICH OFFERS A GOOD INSIGHT INTO THE OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS DURING PEAK DEMAND, IS USED TO DEFINE THE IMPORTANT SYSTEM VARIABLES AND CONSTRAINTS. AFTER CAREFUL ANALYSIS, THE AUTHORS RECOMMEND THAT THE FOLLOWING TOPICS BE USED AS LOGICAL EXTENSIONS OF THIS STUDY: (1) THE DEFINITION OF OTHER SIGNIFICANT PERFORMANCE VARIABLES, IN TERMS OF STATE VARIABLES AND/OR CRITICAL SYSTEM PARAMETERS; (2) THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GENERAL METHOD TO RELATE THE COST OF SUBSYSTEMS TO THE IMPORTANT PERFORMANCE VARIABLES AND CRITICAL SYSTEM PARAMETERS; AND (3) THE OPTIMAL SYSTEM PLANNING FOR LARGE METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS, CONSIDERING THE UNCERTAINTIES IN FUTURE DEMAND PATTERNS, CITY EXPANSION, INTEREST RATES, INVESTMENT COSTS, OPERATING COSTS AND REVENUES, OR OTHER UNPREDICTABLE CHANGES IN THE MODEL. /UMTA/
