CENTRAL TELEPHONE INFORMATION SERVICE FOR NASSAU COUNTY BUS SYSTEM

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO DESIGN A CENTRAL TELEPHONE INFORMATION SERVICE FOR ALL PRESENT BUS AND RAIL OPERATIONS SERVING NASSAU COUNTY. A SURVEY WAS MADE OF EACH OF THE PRESENT BUS CARRIERS IN NASSAU COUNTY TO DETERMINE PREVAILING PRACTICE AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR BUS INFORMATION SERVICE. IT WAS QUITE EVIDENT FROM INSPECTION OF THE TELEPHONE FACILITIES AT EACH OF THE BUS COMPANIES THAT NONE OF THEM WAS ORGANIZED IN A FASHION WHICH MIGHT BE ADAPTED TO HANDLE THE CENTRAL TELEPHONE INFORMATION SERVICES FOR ALL COMPANIES. A SURVEY WAS THEN MADE IN THREE OTHER CITIES WHERE THE CENTRAL INFORMATION SERVICES ARE SUFFICIENTLY WELL ORGANIZED TO ACCOMMODATE PUBLIC NEEDS. NONE OF THE SYSTEMS FITS EXACTLY THE NASSAU COUNTY REQUIREMENTS, BUT TOGETHER THEY CONTAIN ALL THE FEATURES NEEDED IN THE PROPOSED NASSAU SERVICE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A CENTRAL TELEPHONE INFORMATION SERVICE BE ESTABLISHED IN THE OFFICE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND FRANCHISES IN THE COUNTY OFFICE BUILDING, TO CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING: (1) SEVEN-POSITION AUTOMATIC CALL DISTRIBUTOR SYSTEM; (2) TWO TELEPHONE TABLE CONSOLES, EACH ACCOMODATING FOUR OPERATORS; (3) 12 INCOMING LINES TO SIX TELEPHONE STATIONS AND ONE SUPERVISOR'S STATION; (4) A COMPLETED CALL COUNTER AND LOST CALL COUNTER: (5) LOOSE-LEAF BINDERS CONTAINING SECTIONAL MAPS OF NASSAU COUNTY, PREPARED BY HAGSTROM'S ATLAS MAPS; AND (6) RING BINDERS CONTAINING OPERATING SCHEDULES OF EACH BUS COMPANY IN PICKET DIVIDERS. /UMTA/
