PERFORMANCE DEMONSTRATION OF THE ALTERNATING CURRENT PROPULSION SYSTEM FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT

THE RESULTS OF TESTS CONDUCTED TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON SYSTEM PERFORMANCE, INCLUDING ACCELERATION RATES, EFFICIENCY, RELIABILITY, AND CONTROLLABILITY OF THE AUTHOR'S PROPULSION EQUIPMENT, ARE DETAILED. THE COMPLETELY STATIC PROPULSION SYSTEM, TESTED ON A SINGLE TRUCK SYSTEM INCLUDING A FLYWHEEL SIMULATING CAR INERTIA AND A PROGRAMMED DYNAMOMETER SIMULATING WIDAGE AND FRICTION LOSSES, CONSISTS OF A STATIC DC LINK INVERTER DRIVING AN AC SQUIRREL CAGE INDUCTION MOTOR. THREE-PHASE 60 HZ POWER IS CONVERTED TO VARIABLE FREQUENCY POWER WHICH CONTROLS THE TRACTIVE EFFORT OF THE MOTOR, WITH DYNAMIC BRAKING ACCOMPLISHED BY CAUSING THE MOTOR TO REGENERATE POWER WHICH IS DISSIPATED IN RESISTANCE GRIDS. RESULTS OF INITIAL TESTING IN A NUMBER OF AREAS FELL SHORT OF THE DESIGN GOALS. MANY PROBLEMS, INCLUDING SYSTEM STABILITY, POWER LOSS CAPABILITY, WIDE SPEED RANGE, AND TRACTIVE EFFORT CONTROL, WERE SOLVED SATISFACTORILY DURING THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING PERIOD. RE-RUN TESTS, MADE FOLLOWING THE DEMONSTRATION, INDICATE THAT THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS PROPULSION SYSTEM WHICH REPRESENTS A MAJOR STEP IN THE ART OF SOLID-STATE TECHNOLOGY, CAN BE IMPROVED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF RAPID TRANSIT SERVICE.
