EXTREME WAVE HEIGHT DISTRIBUTIONS OVER OCEANS
The scale and shape parameters of the extreme wind speed distribution are transformed to scale and shape parameters of the extreme wave distribution for extratropical storm areas. This provides the means of obtaining the extreme wave distribution anywhere in deep water in these areas. Estimates of the extreme wave period are obtained from applying known empirical relationships to estimated significant wave height quantiles. A method is explored for obtaining extreme wave height quantiles for tropical cyclone areas from available extreme wind quantiles through applying empirical relationships involving duration of high winds.
