INVESTIGATION AND TESTING OF PLASTIC INSULATED ELECTRICAL CONTACT RAIL 4160 VOLTS, 3-PHASE, NO 60 CYCLE, ALTERVATING CURRENT

ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRICAL-MECHANICAL TESTS CONDUCTED ON A 4160 VOLT, 3-PHASE, 60 CYCLE, A-C ELECTRICAL CONTACT LINE ASSEMBLY DESIGNED TO EMPLOY A HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE EXTRUSION TO COMBINE THE FUNCTIONS OF MECHANICAL CONDUCTOR SUPPORT, CONDUCTOR INSULATION, AND COVER FOR PERSONNEL PROTECTION INTO A SINGLE STRUCTURE ARE DISCRIBED. THE TEST PROGRAM WAS DIVIDED INTO: (1) DIELECTRIC TESTS, (2) RADIO INFLUENCE VOLTAGE TESTS, (3) IMPEDENCE AND THERMAL CHARACTERISTIC TESTS, AND (4) SHORT-CIRCUIT CURRENT TESTS. RESULTS DISCLOSED A SYSTEM, WITH THREE CONDUCTORS IN A VERTICAL CONFIGURATION SUPPORTED AT THE SIDE OF THE RUNNING RAILS ON PERIODICALLY PLACED STANCHIONS ATTACHED TO THE RAIL TIES, TO BE THE MOST SUITABLE FORM FOR A 4160 VOLT ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR SYSTEM. IT WAS FURTHER CONCLUDED THAT CONDUCTOR ASSEMBLIES IN EXTRUDED POLYETHYLENE SUPPORTS CAN WITHSTAND THE MAXIMUM SHORT-CIRCUIT CURRENTS REQUIRED FOR BARDT. /UMTA/
