Pleasure Trip Gone Wrong

In 2010, a cruise ship sailing off the coast of Mexico suffered a major mechanical failure which resulted in a fire in the aft engine room. The fire was extinguished with no fatalities, but the ship lost power for propulsion and hotel services and needed to be towed to port. An investigation found areas of concern in the ship’s safety procedures and decisions by the crew. The vessel complied with Safety of Life At Sea requirements for monthly fire drills, but documentation was sparse . Investigators could not determine the exact cause of the power loss, but believe it was caused by fire damage to the wires and cables in the engine room. Safety recommendations were given that addressed the conditions of the ship that contributed to the issues.
