PUBLIC TRANSPORT JOURNEY TIMES IN LONDON - 1970

THE JOURNEY TIMES BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT OF 120 TRIPS SAMPLES FROM THE LONDON TRAFFIC SURVEY WERE MEASURED. WALKING, WAITING, INTERCHANGE AND ON-VEHICLE TIMES WERE SEPARATELY IDENTIFIED FOR BUS TRAVEL AND FOR A COMBINED RAIL NETWORK (BRITISH RAIL AND LONDON TRANSPORT). MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE DURING THE MORNING PEAK, OFFPEAK AND EVENING PEAK PERIODS. ON-VEHICLE TIMES FOR TYPICAL RING AND RADIAL ROUTES WERE OBTAINED FROM PUBLISHED SCHEDULES FOR BOTH BUS AND RAIL, AND RELATED TO THEIR DISTANCE FROM THE CENTER OF LONDON. THESE RELATIONS WERE THEN CALIBRATED AGAINST THE MEASURED TIMES OF THE SAMPLED TRIPS, AND RESULTS ARE GIVEN AS CONSTANT JOURNEY TIMES PER KM OVER INNER AND OUTER ZONES. WALKING, WAITING AND INTERCHANGE TIMES WERE ANALYZED BY DISTANCE FROM THE CENTER, TRIP LENGTH, AND WHETHER THE TRIP WAS RING OR RADIAL. RESULTS ARE GIVEN IN TABULATED FORM, AND ARE COMPARED WITH DATA FROM OTHER SOURCES. THE RELATION BETWEEN PASSENGER WAITING TIMES AND SERVICE FREQUENCY IS ALSO INVESTIGATED. /AUTHOR/
