Following the Rules

Due to a number of incidents between 2011 and 2013, the safety record of the cruise industry has been called into question. Responsibility for ship safety belongs to the owners and managers, though they often seek help from classification societies in identifying and evaluating safety risks. Classification societies serve as an independent third party that develops and enforces a set of standards for the design and maintenance of a vessel. The role may begin in the design phase and continue throughout the vessel’s service life, in order to safeguard life, property, and the environment.
