Experimental investigations on effect of coir geotextile on rutting characteristics in asphalt overlays

Coir geotextiles is one of the important natural materials used in ground improvement techniques. An experimental program was conducted to determine the effects of coir geotextiles in modifying characteristics of bituminous overlay. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of coir geotextile inclusion and its position in mitigating the permanent deformation or rutting behavior. Results showed that rut deformation is related to the position of geotextile layer in the pavement structure. Flexible pavements are complex structures consisting of several layers of asphalt and granular materials. Non-linear mechanical behavior of the pavement materials combined with the randomness in traffic and environmental conditions complicate the analysis of these structures. Finite element analysis was done using software ABAQUS for studying the structural behavior of coir geotextile modified pavement. Analysis showed introduction of coir geotextile in the overlay reduced vertical strain concentration, which in turn dissipates rutting potential. Field studies conducted on experimental road stretch showed a notable reduction in pavement deflection.
