A modern light rail for Perth
Unprecedented development in Perth’s central business district (CBD) and outlying suburbs over the coming years will provide great challenges and opportunities to meet changing demands. The existing public transport network will not cope with the projected increase in use. Public transport will have to operate differently if it is to reduce congestion, improve accessibility and reduce fossil fuel consumption. A new rapid transit system that can move large numbers of people during peak hours is needed, especially for the CBD and central northern suburbs. The rail network cannot include another line to service the northern suburbs without significant cost and disruption to existing commercial and residential areas, and buses alone will not support projected passenger numbers. The proposed solution is a light rail network that not only links the suburbs to the CBD, but will also change the way people move through the CBD. This paper outlines the exciting light rail project and the opportunities and challenges arising.
