Green urban transportation solutions

This paper summarises current efforts undertaken by Alstom with the support of its key suppliers worldwide to reduce energy consumption and thus further reduce the overall carbon footprint of railway systems in general and electric one in particular. These efforts are driven by the Alstom group demonstrated commitment to sustainability: Alstom is part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices at the World and European levels. The paper first addresses the role of overall integrated system engineering approach in optimising the design of system to maximise energy efficiency. The paper then presents specific development effort at the rolling stock level and its major components, introduction of new solutions, and their effects on reduction of energy consumption. The paper also covers new development in train control and the specific efforts in the area of Driver Assistance Systems for manual operation. Finally, the paper presents a new dc traction architecture that allow full regeneration of the kinetic energy stored in an electrically powered train over its full operating range. The overall effect of these efforts are currently yielding savings ranging from a few % on component efficiency up to 15% on introduction of new solutions/technologies. It further reinforces rail transportation as the leading sustainable means of transportation.
