Solar-powered technology for ETCS installation

The application of European Train Control System (ETCS) technology within Australia has begun with State rail operators reviewing the success of different worldwide applications and how they can be applied to the Australian rail network. Europe, like Australia is still a long way from full transition to ETCS. ETCS technology is however already helping to make trains safer, more reliable more energy efficient and to increase capacity in many projects around the world. In Switzerland, Siemens is equipping a large part of the network of the Swiss Federal Railway SBB with ETCS Level 1. The project includes upgrading nearly 10,000 signals to ETCS requirements with lineside electronic units (LEUs) as signal interface to control Eurobalises. More than half of the LEUs supplied are to be powered exclusively by solar cells and will therefore be energy self-sufficient. This paper describes the reasons that have lead to this solution, the technology used and the benefits resulting from using solar power.
