Adelaide a-city emu: delivery of a vehicle fully compliant to EN 15227

A contract to supply a new fleet of 25kV Electric Multiple Units for the Adelaide suburban network was awarded to Bombardier in 2011. Amongst other requirements, this specification called for full compliance with the European Standard EN 15227 Railway applications - Crashworthiness Requirements for Railway Vehicle Bodies for Category C-I. The unified European crashworthiness norm, EN 15227, which was released in 2008, brought together all the research on best practice crashworthy design with analysis of the most serious rail vehicle accidents in Europe. The Adelaide EMU crashworthiness design has drawn upon the recent experiences and developments made by Bombardier whilst designing and building vehicles compliant to this standard. This paper outlines the steps that were undertaken to design and validate the Adelaide EMU into a vehicle that will be fully compliant to EN 15227 Category C-I.
