Virtual signal sighting walkover

Promoting cutting edge computer graphics technology, Aurecon have successfully implemented a virtual 3D visualisation signal sighting tool on the TrackStar Alliance Richlands to Springfield Rail project. The 3D visualisation tool makes vast improvements over the traditional design methods which have been demonstrated to be lacking particularly for complex infrastructure with challenging sighting issues. A particular constraint on this project was the background interference and distraction from the adjacent highway from road vehicle headlights over a significant section of the rail corridor. The 3D visualisation tool was implemented as an integral part of the design process such that the final design afforded train drivers’ adequate advance sighting of the signals to receive a clear and unambiguous message and significantly reduced the risk of the signal sighting committee identifying any issues at final commissioning which has often lead to costly construction re-work. An example of the type of costly signal sighting issue which can occur with the use of traditional design methods is also presented.
