Development of a new wheel dampener for wheel squeal

The paper describes the development and testing of a dampening device for railway wheels (Unidamp) and Its applicatlon In reducing the level of w~eel squeal in curved track. Results from laboratory tests on 1/3 scale and full-scale wheels are shown. FieId test data for wheel squeal sites at a suburban rail station and in a concrete tunnel are detailed, with significant reductions in noise level readings.
