Current State of Bridge Deterioration in the U.S.—Part 2

In this article, the author examines bridge deterioration as caused by corrosion of reinforced concrete, steel, and prestressed concrete. The primary sources of corrosion and deterioration for different bridge types are discussed, including chloride ions for reinforced concrete bridge, and fatigue cracking and coating failures for steel bridges. The author suggests that deterioration of prestresed concrete bridges is more serious than deterioration of reinforced concrete bridges and steel bridges, and a number of strategies for preserving bridge decks are presented.
